Into the Mojave: Desert Flora, explores the flora and habitats of Mojave National Preserve through a series of woodcuts created during an art residency at Mojave National Preserve.
“An art residency at Mojave National Preserve offered me the opportunity to live and work in the Preserve, April 2019. With a plant guide in hand I explored MNP, from Kelso Dunes and Kelbaker Road to the Mid-Hills area and Teutonia Peak Trail. The plants were my guide and led me into the Mojave, a wondrous world, from tiny desert daisies to the flowering Mojave Yucca and Joshua Trees. The explosive color and form of the many desert cacti, including Beavertail, Hedgehog Cactus, and Mojave Mound Cactus, were thrilling to study in their native habitat. Barrel cactus like stalwart Buddhas and clumps of Mojave Yucca, like desert crones, towering over the scrubland, seem to watch over and protect their territory. These plants and many others inspired a journey into the Mojave.”
